Simplicity: Keeping It Simple…Sort Of

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.  ~Archimedes

That is one of, if not the only, theorems I retained from my tenth-grade geometry class. Perhaps it is because I see the point. I applied it today…well, my Google maps application applied it…when it identified my fastest route based on the distance between my Current Location and the address I entered and calculated the estimated time I would arrive based on the amount of traffic.

I think it applies to editing, too. I’ll prove it.

Note all the straight lines to prove my point. I have done what the creator of Dilbert suggests in the following quotation.

Simple means getting rid of extra words. Don’t write, “He was very happy” when you can write “He was happy.” You think “very” adds something. It doesn’t.  ~Scott Adams

Removing “tenth-grade” made me happy. Most of my tenth grade year was happy because I started dating my future husband. Happiness is not being in the same math class with your ninth-grade sister. In fact, I think I could get rid of more words.

I suppose I could kept the third sentence, but it is far from concise. I repeated the word “applied” twice and implied it with “application.” Also, my estimated arrival time today depended less on traffic and more on everyone’s presence in the car at the designated departure time.

That is the only theorem I retained from geometry class. Perhaps it is because I see the point.

I have made a much more concise, accurate…oh, wait! Maybe not.

This is one of two definitions I retained from geometry class. Perhaps it is because I see the point.

This leads me to my second point.

Simplicity is the secret of seeing things clearly. ~Oswald Chambers

It is very plain to see…I mean…

It is plain to see…

Wait a minute.

This is one of two definitions I retained from geometry class. Perhaps it is because I see the point planely.

This statement proves why the acronym K.I.S.S. is “Keep It Simple, Stupid.”

Life is too short. We desire it to be simple. Yet, by the time we map out the fastest means to an end, we find ourselves traversing a path we never intended. In fact, we would avoid it altogether if it did not lead us to a higher plane.

I think I will go with what is concise, accurate, and truthful.

What is “that” again? Oh, right!

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.  ~Archimedes

Huh, I never noticed that the words “arc” and “arch” are in the name “Archimedes.” How symbolic, even poetic!

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. ~William Shakespeare

Here I thought I had come full circle, and I have happened upon another tangent. Enough!

Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.  ~Lin Yutang.

Of these non-essentials, I still include geometry…unless it points to posts or poetry.
