Content: In All Circumstances

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.

Philippians 4:11 NASB

In 2019, God lead me to study the word content and by extension I found myself back in Philippians 4 and specifically in verse 11. I considered myself to be blessed. But, there was a nagging disconcertedness that troubled me at the time. I knew this was why this particular verse would be “mine” for the year. As a bonus, this particular word has an alternate meaning and pronunciation. How well God knows His children! Of course, He would connect my work-in-progress with my One Word. But, more on that in my next post.

The irony of the turmoil many feel right now is not lost on me as I reflect on the word content. It is no exaggeration that many are not. But, may I encourage you that it is possible. As I entered into 2020 with a new One Word, I had been equipped to face what would have discouraged me before my in-depth year of content.

Throughout my study of content, I explored several studies. Another study crossed my path this year through my current Bible study. I extend this list of resources, hoping that these will inspire you to be content in all circumstances beginning now.

In addition to (or instead of) these resources, add the Book of Philippians to your study time. You will be enriched by what this letter of Paul teaches about joy and contentment. As we near the end of a tumultuous year, may you find contentment in the only way possible.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
